Dear Reader,
Writing a résumé, for many of us, is a daunting task. I'll share my secret to enable you to craft a résumé which will read like breaking news!

I’ve looked at hundreds of résumés since 1995, when I began my executive search and coaching career. Almost every résumé focuses on process with very little or insufficient information on outcome. What do I mean? Here’s a real life example:

What you do = |
PROCESS: |
Spent one month dieting |
|
What you achieve = |
OUTCOME: |
Lost 12 pounds |
The point is that you can spend a lot of time doing whatever. The question is, What did you achieve? The employer who reads your résumé will search for the outcomes. Look at your résumé now and ask yourself, “Does my résumé focus on process or outcome?” If the answer is process, then make a list of outcomes. Do not become discouraged if you need to spend a lot time doing this. This time is well spent.
When you are ready to revise your résumé, reduce the process information. Focus on incorporating the outcomes from your list, adding any new outcomes.
