WIN Without Competing! Newsletter

Dear Reader,
How many times have you said, "I assumed," only to find out that your assumption was erroneous? Such assumptions can be perilous, if you act on them. Watch what Sarah did.
Hold on for the ride! |
Sarah, a candidate that I have known for many years, called me one day, very upset. She had resigned from her position, packed up, and moved from Chicago to Los Angeles to assume a new position—so she thought. When she arrived, they said, "Sorry, we cannot hire you. Our company was just acquired." This story sounds unbelievable. How could this happen to Sarah and many others?
Sarah had accepted a verbal offer. The company told her that she would sign her offer letter upon arrival. She assumed that this was a formality and did not question their procedure. Based on the verbal offer, she resigned from her current position. She relocated without asking for moving expenses because she had few possessions.
Never, never, never resign from a position without signing an offer letter first. Carefully evaluate the "next" employer before jumping ship, to be sure that the company is stable. Usually, there are forebodings indicating downsizing, acquisition, or bankruptcy. Sara was stuck. She had assumed . . .
What did I tell her to do? I told Sarah to talk with her former employer and explain the situation, but not to ask for her job back. She had worked for this company for eight years; they liked and respected her. I felt that they might re-hire her. She pitched herself as we had discussed. The result: they rehired Sarah. She was very fortunate. Her professionalism—she gave a month's notice—coupled with outstanding service, paid off. Never burn bridges!
